Indeed. Silverlight, and Adobe's Flex, are about replacing the browser. Cool, but you get into a lot of cross-platform issues and proprietary standards. Technologies like Dojo and other Ajax frameworks have the potential to enable similar interactions within the browser - probably not as rich initially, but at least based on existing and open standards.

Strikeiron and O'Reilly put on a non-browser mashup contest at O'Reilly ETEL (specifically in the voice/telephony space). To learn about the types of non-browser mashups that were created, visit http://www.strikeiron.com/developers/contest.aspx

Another 'virtual job' is when people pay others to do boring, repetitive tasks in games such as World of Warcraft. From what I gather, this happens all the time, mostly using cheap labor from Asia and such.

It's a hard sell though. I've told others about my previous posts on MossyBlog and I get confused looks - what do you mean the browser is dead...how can we possibly surf the net without it.

The thing is we are, we do it daily but the browser we know it right now is evolving to the next piece, whatever that looks like. All major software companies get this and it's why concepts like "SOA" or "SaaS" exist, as they hint in this direction.

What the end agent looks like who really knows - but i think the internet explorers, firefoxs, operas etc aren't the right fit.

A good analogy for REST is calling an object, getting back a reference to another object, calling that object, getting back a reference, and so forth.

A good analogy for SOAP is only ever calling static methods, and passing arguments around to tell the static method which instance you actually ment to call, if you could.

So I'm confused when you say REST is the counter intuitive one.

Stefano,

This is a good summary of the current state of Internet applications.

I think that the way forward is Lisp running in the browser on top of Flash or WPF. There are some examples on my site.

Cheers,
